What to Do and See in San Diego

The ACG Annual Scientific Meeting and Postgraduate Course will be held in San Diego, October 23-28, 2009, at the San Diego Convention Center. At an average temperature of 72 degrees, the second largest city in California has something for everyone.  Whether it’s a vibrant downtown location you thrive for or beautiful scenery and open waters, San Diego delivers.

Take to the water or watch the sunset from the 70 miles of beaches.  Hop over the border to Mexico or take a trek to the Anza-Borrego Desert and the Laguna Mountains.  All are just a short trip from downtown.

Ask someone what first comes to mind when you say San Diego and they may say the Zoo.  The San Diego Zoo, considered one of the finest in the country if not the world, is situated on over 100 acres and is home to more than 4,000 rare and endangered animals and boasts a collection of more than 700,000 exotic plants.  The San Diego Zoo is a must see for anyone visiting.

Another must see is Balboa Park.  The largest urban cultural park, it is home to 15 museums including the Japanese Friendship Garden, Marston House, Reuben H. Fleet Science Center, San Diego Museum of Art, San Diego Zoo and more.  The landscape is breathtaking and several of the photographs we’ve used to highlight San Diego include images of Balboa Park.  Take a day or more to explore the many museums and beautiful grounds.

Go Navy! San Diego is home base to thousands serving in the Navy so it was only fitting that San Diego become the homeport for the USS Midway Museum.  The USS Midway was the longest serving carrier.  Commissioned in 1945, it now serves as an interactive museum.  Put on your walking shoes and take the short trek to explore the Midway and talk with veterans who served on the ship.

Know what else is great about San Diego?  It’s airport.  Only three miles from downtown, you’ll be at your hotel within minutes and just steps from more than 100 restaurants.  Take a table outside, enjoy the city’s beautiful weather, and people watch.  The Gaslamp Quarter, also within walking distance from the Convention Center and hotels, offers a menagerie of specialty boutiques.

Tour companies in San Diego give you the opportunity to explore the city and all it has to offer by bus, boat, balloon or plane. To learn more about what there is to do and see in San Diego, visit the San Diego Convention & Visitor’s Bureau website, www.seeyouinSanDiego.com.

We hope you plan to join your colleagues for ACG 2009 in beautiful San Diego, California.  Information about the educational programs will be available soon and registration will open in April.
