CDC: Gastroenteritis deaths double; elderly most affected

CDC data showed gastroenteritis mortality more than doubled between 1999 and 2007, to more than 17,000 deaths annually, and the elderly were most affected. Researchers found Clostridium difficile infection was the leading cause of gastroenteritis-related deaths while norovirus, the No. 1 cause of gastroenteritis in the U.S., was the second-leading cause of death.
