CMS releases final stage 2 EHR meaningful use requirements

The CMS on Thursday issued the final rule on stage 2 EHR meaningful use, which features two additional “core objectives” — electronic messaging adoption among physicians and automatic medication tracking among hospitals. ACG Note: Medicare providers must be participating in stage 2, beginning 2014, which includes reporting 17 “core health IT objectives,” three of six “menu objectives,” as well as nine clinical quality measures from three separate “domains.” In total, there is list is compromised of 64 clinical quality measures and six domains. ACG is encouraged that CMS agreed with the GI societies’ recommendation of adding a “significant hardship exemption” to meaningful use for those providers practicing in multiple locations and lack the ability to control health IT investments when performing a majority of outpatient procedures in these locations. ACG is currently reviewing the final regulation to determine the impact to clinical GI.
