Experts ID 26 gut bacteria linked to metabolic syndrome factors

University of Maryland School of Medicine researchers found 26 intestinal bacterial species were associated with body mass index, serum triglycerides, HDL, total cholesterol, fasting glucose levels and C-reactive protein in members of an Old Order Amish community. The findings suggest “certain members of the gut microbiota may play a role in these metabolic derangements,” researchers said. A causal relationship with metabolic syndrome was not determined.
