FDA warns PPIs may raise C. difficile risk

The FDA has issued a warning stating that proton pump inhibitor therapies may increase risk of Clostridium difficile infection. The warning supports a report presented at an ACG meeting in 2010. Many cases of the complication occurred in patients who had comorbidities or were taking antibiotics, but PPIs could not be excluded as a possible contributing factor. Physicians are advised to prescribe the lowest dose for the shortest duration possible. MedPage Today (free registration) (2/8)
