FODMAP Diet Gaining Attention as Treatment for Functional GI Symptoms

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) has long baffled gastrointestinal experts. Some think it is caused by imbalances in gut bacteria; others point to psychological stress. Now, a small but growing contingent of specialists is focusing on food intolerances as a possible culprit – and a new dietary approach, called the low-FODMAP diet, is gaining attention around the world. This was the main message that Peter Gibson, MD, shared at this year’s American Journal of Gastroenterology lecture at the ACG 2011 Annual Scientific Meeting.
