More GI referrals part of broader trend, study shows

Primary care provider referrals for patients with gastrointestinal symptoms rose 44%, from 12.3% to 17.7% in 2009, compared with a decade earlier, Harvard Medical School researchers reported. The study found that overall physicians were almost twice as likely in 2009 to refer patients to a specialist as they were in 1999. The trend aligns with an overall increase in the number of physician visits. Medscape (free registration) (1/23)
