Physician: Gut microbiome science still in its infancy

The science behind changing microbial gut flora is in early stages but potentially could prevent or lead to treatments for gastrointestinal disorders and even obesity, says Dr. Walter Coyle of the Scripps Clinic in California. He told a physician conference that people are not waiting for the science, however, and are using probiotics, prebiotics and fecal transplants to alter the gut microbiome to reduce GI symptoms.
