What’s new here and important for clinicians?
Although the risk factors of incisional SSI after elective and emergent colorectal surgery have been analyzed, no study, except for ours, has focused exclusively on emergency surgery for colorectal perforation.
Moreover, we indicated the effectiveness of our protocol to prevent SSI in cases in which stoma was created. This result is important and useful for the postoperative care of colorectal perforation.
What do patients need to know?
Stoma creation is the independent risk factor of SSI in patient with colorectal perforation. This is one of the most important reasons for extended postoperative hospital stay.
