What’s new here and important for clinicians?
We live in an era in which new drugs and supplements are routinely placed on the market, often without the need of a prescription. These supplements may not have gone through rigorous clinical trials and therefore have potential unknown side effects. Many supplements are metabolized in the liver with the potential of causing drug induced liver injury. The severity of drug-induced liver injury can range from minor transient liver damage to profound prolonged damage, which may even result in the need for liver transplantation in extreme cases. As physicians, it is important for us to promptly recognize liver injury, but also to report these cases. There are many websites dedicated to providing up-to-date comprehensive clinical information on drug-inducted liver injury such as LiverTox.
What do patients need to know?
The public needs to be mindful of what goes into their bodies and should use their physicians as a resource prior to taking new supplements.
