What’s new here and important for clinicians?
It is well known that African Americans get Barrett’s esophagus (BE) less often than non-Hispanic whites. Our abstract quantifies the risk reduction observed in African Americans.
What do patients need to know?
Two things: African Americans with reflux get BE, but their risk is drastically less than non-Hispanic whites. This also highlights the need to better understand why this risk difference exists despite similar degrees of GERD between the 2 groups.
