Poster 526 Health Literacy and Gastroenterology: A Quantitative Readability Analysis of Patient Education Materials on the Internet

Author Insight from Sahil R. Patel, MD, Chief Resident 2015-2016, Internal Medicine Drexel University College of Medicine

What’s new here and important for clinicians?

We feel clinicians should be aware that the health-related materials available to their patients in their waiting/examination rooms, online, etc. may not necessarily have the desired educational impact. However, this is not to say that the material is not useful. The patient should be made aware of this, and be encouraged to discuss any questions they have regarding the material, no matter how big or small. Prompting a more in-depth discussion of the patient’s condition, could lead to not only a more thorough understanding of the patient’s condition, but also a better relationship between the patient and the physician, especially given that communication and time spent with the patient are major components of patient satisfaction.
