Sunanda V. Kane, MD, MSPH, FACG on Navigating, Networking and Negotiating Your First Job
An interview by Jill Gaidos, MD, FACG
Dr. Jill Gaidos who chairs the College’s Committee on Women in Gastroenterology inaugurated a thought-provoking series of interviews with female gastroenterologists. Her “Conversations with Women in GI” showcases their careers, their accomplishments and their approaches to clinical medicine.
In the latest installment in the series, Dr. Gaidos interviews ACG Treasurer Sunanda V. Kane, MD, MSPH, FACG of Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN. Dr. Kane describes her leadership role in developing the workshop “Navigating, Networking and Negotiating Your First Job” that has been a highlight of the ACG Annual Scientific Meeting since 2008.
I tell the story that I didn’t negotiate my first job at all. I just took what was offered and thanked my new boss and left the office thinking, “This is wonderful.” I never even thought that I could say, “It’s clear that you want me, so how about this, this and this?” It never occurred to me because I had never been taught or mentored that way. — Dr. Susie Kane
Dr. Kane reveals how the workshop evolved to include both women and men and to meet the tremendous demand for training on negotiation. Dr. Gaidos gets Dr. Kane to talk about her career today and what she does to relax.
