Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to play a role in bringing important resources and services to the GI community.  This month, I’m excited to share information about the Sherman Prize, a new program that I’m involved in that seeks to recognize and honor exceptional and pioneering achievements in Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.

There are many unsung heroes in the GI community who have made amazing contributions advancing patient care, medical research and public service in the field of Crohn’s and colitis – and the Sherman Prize for Excellence in Crohn’s and Colitis represents an opportunity to honor and reward this work.

This year, the Sherman Prize will award two or more prizes of $100,000 to health care professionals, medical researchers, public health advocates, or educators who have dedicated significant effort to improving the understanding and management of Crohn’s and colitis. In addition, a $25,000 Sherman Emerging Leader Prize will be awarded to an individual whose work may be less far along, but who demonstrates high potential in the field. These generous prizes are designed to provide flexible funding to award winners to advance their important work.  The Sherman Prize is made possible by the Bruce and Cynthia Sherman Charitable Foundation, which established the Sherman Prize with the hope of inspiring greater advances in the understanding and treatment of these terrible diseases.

I know there are many members of ACG who have worked tirelessly to improve the lives of people with Crohn’s and colitis and I encourage you to take this opportunity to recognize this work by nominating a peer or colleague for the Sherman Prize.  The nomination process is designed for individuals to be nominated by others. We’re relying on peers and colleagues to identify and nominate individuals who have gone above and beyond and deserve recognition.

Here are a few more specifics about the prize:

  • Nominations will be accepted at ShermanPrize.org through June 6, 2016.
  • To be eligible, nominees must live and work in the United States and demonstrate achievement in the last decade, with preference given to those who have made significant contributions to the field in more recent years.
  • Finalists will be selected in the summer and award winners will be announced in the fall of 2016.

As a member of the Sherman Prize Selection Committee, I’m looking forward to evaluating some great nominations. With the support of the ACG community, I’m sure we’ll identify many candidates worthy of recognition.
