Brooklyn VA Develops Viral Hepatitis Awareness Campaign
Eugene Han, MD, and the VA New York Harbor Healthcare System in Brooklyn are at it again—this time having created a graphically inspiring viral hepatitis awareness campaign. The campaign prominently features a female hepatitis superhero, illustrated by Dr. Han, whose objective is to bring attention to liver disease during Hepatitis Awareness Month.
The campaign provides one-page summaries of liver cancer and Hepatitis A, B and C. The summaries include general descriptions, background facts, modes of transmission, symptoms, preventive measures, and treatments or vaccinations, as appropriate.
The superhero is seen striking hepatitis in graphics throughout the campaign. This action manifests what the campaign hopes readers will do, which is to “Be Your Own Hero” by getting checked, talking to your providers and, when feasible, getting vaccinated or treated.
The resource also includes template posters which can be customized to include a team picture, and can then be printed as posters and hung up in physician offices and hospitals.

In March, Dr. Han, of the VA New York Harbor Healthcare System Brooklyn and a first-year GI fellow in training at SUNY Downstate Medical Center, designed the “Super Colon” character to generate colon cancer awareness during National Colon Cancer Awareness Month.
Dr. Han worked with Ayse Aytaman, MD, FACG, Chief of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, VA New York Harbor Healthcare System Brooklyn, to bring forward these courageous superheroes and their messages!
