Poster 1926 Use of a Novel, Submucosal Tunneling Endoscopic Resection (STER) Technique for the Removal of Esophageal Leiomyoma

Author Insight from Madhusudhan R. Sanaka, MD, Cleveland Clinic Foundation

What’s new and important here?

  • We report a novel technique of “Submucosal Tunneling Endoscopic Resection” (STER) for minimally invasive endoscopic resection of upper gastrointestinal submucosal tumors (SMT) originating from the muscularis propria (MP) layer. Initially described in Shanghai, China, use of STER has rarely been reported in Western countries.
  • It is inspired by the combination of NOTES (Natural Orifice Transluminal Endoscopic Surgery) and ESD (Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection) procedures.
  • It is a safe and a minimally invasive procedure, providing clear-cut histopathologic evaluations as well as radical treatments for submucosal tumors. Compared with surgical resection, STER causes little trauma and fewer complications, leading to faster recovery.
  • Our successful experience with the STER procedure at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, USA can be a significant step forward for the management of patients in western countries with upper gastrointestinal SMTs originating from the MP layer.
