Poster 2049 No Difference in Adenoma Detection Rate Between Morning and Afternoon Screening Colonoscopies: A Single Center Study

Author Insight from Vimal M. Bodiwala, MD, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, Rutgers University

What’s new and important here?

There exists conflicting literature about the role time may play on the adenoma detection rate (ADR). Some have reported a lower ADR in afternoon endoscopies, postulating that fatigue experienced by the endoscopist may play a role. Others have reported a higher ADR in afternoon endoscopies, postulating that the endoscopist needs to get into a daily routine before the precision at detecting adenomas increases. Others have reported no difference in ADR between morning and afternoon colonoscopies. As there exist conflicting data about the role time may play on the ADR, we believed it was important to assess the role of time on ADR of our endoscopists. Our study found no statistically significant difference in ADR and cecal withdrawal time between morning and afternoon colonoscopies in setting of similar baseline characteristics between patients of the morning and afternoon groups.
