Poster 351 Use of a Through-The-Scope (TTS) Doppler Ultrasound Probe to Guide Therapy of Suspected and Unsuspected Esophageal Varices

Author Insight from Morgan A. Sendzischew Shane, MD, University of Miami Miller School of Medicine

What’s new and important here?

The way we can potentially change the approach to variceal screening and surveillance. If using the TTS Doppler proves to better identify varices at the time of endoscopy and therefore more effectively treat them, this may lead to quicker eradication, both decreasing the risk of upper GI bleed in patients with portal hypertension, as well as potentially decreasing the need for future surveillance procedures. This is especially important in this sicker patient population, where each additional procedure confers risk.
