Poster 96 Smoking and Risk of Colonic Diverticulosis: A Meta-Analysis

Author Insight from Karn Wijarnpreecha, MD, Bassett Medical Center

What’s new here and important for clinicians?

To the best of our knowledge, this is the first systematic review and meta-analysis that summarizes all available studies on the relationship between smoking and the risk of colonic diverticulosis. We found an approximately 1.5-fold increased risk of colonic diverticulosis in current smokers compared with non-smokers from three prospective cohort studies with 130,520 participants.

What do patients need to know?

Smoking is shown to be significantly associated with colonic diverticulosis, which is a well-known condition contributing to diverticular bleeding.
