P0603 Prevalence of Celiac Disease in Cirrhosis: A Population-Based Study

What’s new here and important for clinicians?
Our study found that the prevalence of Celiac disease is at least three times greater in patients with cirrhosis compared with the general population. Similar findings have been reported in other clinical research investigations. One prospective study found that after initiation of a gluten free diet, not only did small bowel biopsies normalize but liver function studies returned to normal. Further research is needed to investigate the relationship between Celiac disease and cirrhosis. Screening for Celiac disease in cirrhotic patients may be warranted.
What do patients need to know?
Based upon our findings, patients with cirrhosis should talk with their doctors regarding the need for Celiac disease screening.
