What’s new and important here?
Colorectal cancer remains the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States. Colonoscopy continues to be an important tool for colon cancer screening and prevention. Unfortunately, poor bowel preparation can be a barrier to effective colon cancer screening. This study suggests that patients with a history of bariatric surgery are at higher risk for inadequate bowel preparation. As the obesity epidemic continues to grow in the United States, bariatric surgery is becoming more common each year. It may be necessary to develop new protocols for bowel preparation to ensure that this unique and growing population receives adequate colon cancer screening and prevention.
