Dr. Hanauer Embodies the Spirit of the Berk/Fise Award
ACG Past President Dr. Stephen B. Hanauer is this year’s Berk/Fise Clinical Achievement Awardee for his significant and distinguished contributions to clinical gastroenterology. This annual award recognizes not only clinical excellence, but also contributions in patient care, clinical science, clinical education,
technological innovation, and public and community service.
ACG Service
Dr. Hanauer was ACG President from 2014 to 2015, and has been Chair of the College’s Finance & Budget Committee and a member of the Board of Trustees. Additionally, he served as a member of the Credentials Committee, Publications Committee, and Research Committee. In 1999, Dr. Hanauer delivered the David Sun Lecture at the ACG Postgraduate Course.
Prolific Academic Career
Dr. Hanauer’s research in inflammatory bowel disease has impacted the practice of gastroenterology for several generations of gastroenterologists. His career in academic medicine began at the University of Chicago in 1982 as Assistant Professor of Medicine, and rising to Joseph B. Kirsner Professor of Medicine in 1999. He was the Chief of the Section of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, & Nutrition from 2000-2013 and Director of The Logan Center for GI Clinical Research from 1983-2013. Beginning January 2014, he became the Clifford Joseph Barborka Professor of Medicine and Medical Director of the Digestive Health Center at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.
Many colleagues in GI have benefited from Dr. Hanauer’s mentorship. One of his recommenders notes that Dr. Hanauer’s “leadership style has always been based on consensus. He encourages the contribution of all people at the table. His thoughtfulness and meticulous attention to detail punctuate his approach to tackling problems.”
With an international reputation for original clinical research in the areas of IBD, epidemiology and clinical pharmacology, Dr. Hanauer has authored over 400 original peer reviewed papers, 67 editorials, 83 book chapters, 13 books, and numerous abstracts, booklets, and monographs. He has served as the Editor-in-Chief for Nature Clinical Practice Gastroenterology & Hepatology from 2004-2010 and has been the Section Editor for Gastroenterology & Hepatology from 2005 to the present.
Active in the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation since 1985, Dr. Hanauer has chaired numerous committees and the Foundation’s Clinical Research Alliance from 1999 to 2003. From 1998 to 2000 he chaired the FDA Gastrointestinal Drugs Advisory Committee, and is currently on the FDA GREAT: Adult IBD Planning Committee since 2013, where he authored “Guidelines for the Clinical Evaluation of Drugs for Patients with IBD.” He has served on the NIH ACE Steering Committee since 2009, as a member of NIH’s R23 Review Committee in 2008, and as a DDRCC Reviewer in 2009.
Honors
Dr. Hanauer’s career has been highlighted by numerous awards and tributes to his talents as a clinician and teacher. He was a recipient of the CCFA Scientific Achievement Award for Clinical Research in 2011, and the Inspirational Physician Award from American Medical Association in 2014. He has been on the Castle Connolly Top Doctor, American Registry since 2005.

ABOUT THE BERK/FISE CLINICAL ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
The Berk/Fise Clinical Achievement Award, formerly the ACG Clinical Achievement Award, is presented to no more than one member/fellow of the College in any year, and is made in recognition of distinguished contributions to clinical gastroenterology over a significant period of time. Specific criteria include, in addition to a career of distinguished clinical practice of gastroenterology, contributions in patient care, clinical science, clinical education, technological innovation, and public and community service.
