The American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) is committed to diversity in our organization and the gastroenterology (GI) workforce. ACG recognizes the tremendous need to enrich our field with clinicians and scientists from underrepresented groups and cultivate a digestive health community that more accurately reflects our patient populations.
We, the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee, believe that a formalized mentorship and clinical research program is one pipeline to accomplish this. Thus, we are extremely excited about continuing the ACG Summer Scholars Program.
The ACG Summer Scholars program is an eight- to 10-week structured clinical research experience for medical students from underrepresented groups. Two students will be chosen from the pool of applicants, paired with research mentors who share similar clinical and/or research interests, and awarded a $5,000 stipend.
At the end of the program, the students are required to submit a progress report and an abstract to a local, regional, or national conference.
The Committee is currently seeking ACG members interested in participating in the program. Faculty do not have to be from an underrepresented group (though faculty members from an underrepresented group are strongly encouraged to participate), but must be affiliated with an academic institution where their research is conducted.
