Monica A. Tincopa, MD

The American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) is proud to recognize Dr. Monica Tincopa, Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at UC San Diego, as part of our Hispanic Heritage Month celebration.

Dr. Tincopa’s work focuses on improving liver health in underserved populations, particularly within Hispanic communities. Her research explores metabolic dysfunction–associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and MetALD, emphasizing noninvasive fibrosis assessment, screening disparities, and the influence of social determinants of health on disease outcomes. Her recent publication, “Disparities in screening and risk stratification for Hispanic adults with MASLD,” highlights this ongoing commitment to equity in care.

In recognition of her dedication, Dr. Tincopa received the ACG Leonidas Berry Health Equity Research Award, which supports her continued efforts to advance inclusion and health equity in hepatology.

Beyond her research, Dr. Tincopa is a co-founder of La LiGaH (Latinos in Gastroenterology and Hepatology)—a network promoting Latinx representation and collaboration across the field.

A dedicated mentor and advocate, Dr. Tincopa works closely with medical students, residents, fellows, and early-career faculty, especially those from underrepresented backgrounds. Through mentorship and public engagement, she continues to promote La LiGaH, celebrate heritage, and encourage inclusion in hepatology.

Her commitment to equity, mentorship, and innovation reflects the spirit of Hispanic Heritage Month.

The ACG celebrates Dr. Tincopa for her professional achievements and her unwavering dedication to diversity, culturally informed care, and health equity in gastroenterology and hepatology.
