What’s new here and important for clinicians?
Delays in insurance prior authorization approvals impact the health outcomes for patients with IBD. IBD patients may experience inpatient stays or even surgical interventions while waiting for their insurance company to prior authorize a prescribed therapy. This results in the overuse of steroids and creates health disparities in select geographic locations with primitive processes. The tribal knowledge of working with insurers and pharmacy benefit managers needs to be better shared. There are many levels of appeal and peer review available to assist IBD prescribers and their patients.

What do patients need to know?
Seek appropriate medical care early in your disease progression. Have a primary care physician and complete annual health maintenance items.
