Author Insight from Khaled Alsabbagh Alchirazi, MD
What’s new here and important for clinicians?
GLP-1 receptor agonist medications are commonly prescribed to manage diabetes mellitus, and because their mechanism of action impacts the pancreas, it is important to investigate whether they could cause pancreatic cancer. In our study, there was no increased risk of pancreatic cancer. This was seen in both obese and non-obese diabetic patients.
What do patients need to know?
Although there were previous reports suggesting possible association between pancreatic cancer and GLP-1 receptor agonist medications, this study provides reassurance that there is no observed increased incidence of pancreatic cancer in patients prescribed these medications.
