Oral 9 Bundle Payments for Care Improvement in Patients With Gastrointestinal Hemorrhage: Reducing Costs and Readmission Rates at a Single Hospital Center

Author Insight from David Kadosh, MD, Lenox Hill Hospital, Northwell Health

What’s new here and important for clinicians?

  • Bundle Payments Care initiatives are incentive based payment programs designed with efficacy, patient outcomes, and reduced expenditures in mind.
  • One of the first utilized and reported applications of BPCI by Gastrointestinal Hemorrhage, a common and potentially deadly condition.
  • Standardization of hospital admission and post-hospitalization care reduced overall expenditure by $99,000 and improved patient outcomes through decreased readmissions to the hospital.

What do patients need to know?

By employing a standard protocol and using a multidisciplinary approach for GI bleeds and admissions to the hospital, we were able to reduce readmissions for a common and dangerous condition and increase cost savings as compared to prior systems used.
