Author Insight from Kara Jencks, MD
What’s new here and important for clinicians?
The gastric emptying testing for diagnosing gastroparesis most often relies on a radiolabeled egg meal. Many patients are not able to eat this, and this study suggests that a vegan egg alternative is likely a great alternative based on the results of our in vitro and clinical pilot study. Additional testing in a larger cohort of healthy volunteers and patients with known gastroparesis would confirm the suitability as an alternative to the standard egg meal.
What do patients need to know?
A non-egg option is around the corner for testing stomach emptying. The first in patient study using the vegan and allergy friendly option showed promising results.
