Registry Surpasses 10 Million Colonoscopies for GI Quality Improvement Consortium (GIQuIC)

BETHESDA, MD, December 12, 2019

The GI Quality Improvement Consortium, Ltd. (GIQuIC) national registry of endoscopic procedures now includes data reported for more than 10 million colonoscopies. GIQuIC is a joint initiative of the American College of Gastroenterology and the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.

Launched in 2010, this clinical benchmarking platform fosters the ability of endoscopists and endoscopy facilities to measure their performance. Leveraging real-time clinical data, GIQuIC users are able to conduct ongoing, peer-based performance evaluation at the individual level, at the facility level, and against the national cohort.

“At 10 million colonoscopies, GIQuIC is a robust source of valid and reliable comparative data for the scientific measurement of the quality of endoscopic procedures. Our objectives are to continue to advance quality improvement for participating physicians and facilities, serve as a data resource for endoscopic investigators, and meet the needs of registry participants as their practices and payment models evolve,” commented Glenn M. Eisen, MD, MPH, FASGE, President of the GIQuIC Board of Directors.

The registry hit 100,000 colonoscopies in 2012, 1 million colonoscopies in 2014, and 4 million colonoscopies in 2017. The GIQuIC registry has also documented over 1,800,000 EGD procedures. More than 4,800 physicians participate in GIQuIC at over 750 locations, representing more than 500 unique entities.

About GIQuIC – a CMS Qualified Clinical Data Registry (QCDR)
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) approved GIQuIC to continue as a Qualified Clinical Data Registry (QCDR) for the 2019 performance year, a designation the registry has held since 2014, the year in which CMS established QCDR reporting. GIQuIC’s QCDR status allows endoscopists to document compliance with quality measures. The 2019 GIQuIC QCDR is approved to report for individual eligible providers, groups, and virtual groups to the Quality, Promoting Interoperability, and Improvement Activities performance categories. Visit giquic.gi.org/qpp.asp to see the list of measures available for reporting to the MIPS Quality performance category via the GIQuIC 2019 QCDR.

About GIQuIC – Quality Measures
More than 12 colonoscopy quality measures are benchmarked by GIQuIC, including adenoma detection rate, rate of cecal intubation, adherence to appropriate screening and surveillance intervals, prep assessment, and appropriate indications for procedure, among others. Quality metrics for upper GI endoscopy (EGD) procedures are also collected in the GIQuIC registry. These measures reflect the best science and evidence base for the performance of endoscopic procedures.

About GIQuIC
The GI Quality Improvement Consortium, Ltd. (GIQuIC) is an educational and scientific 501(c)(3) organization established by gastroenterologists, physicians specializing in digestive disorders. GIQuIC is a joint initiative of the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) and the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE). This national benchmarking project began by measuring data related to common endoscopic procedures employed by gastroenterologists. Endoscopy is a minimally invasive medical procedure that is used to assess the digestive system organs by inserting a tube orally into a patient’s stomach or rectally into the patient’s colon. The physician founders of GIQuIC believe that the scientific measurement of the quality of endoscopic procedures will improve the quality of the medical care being given to patients throughout the United States and abroad, and ultimately will improve the quality of public health.
