Foods, supplements, OTC products can affect how medications work

Food, beverages and dietary supplements can interact with prescription and over-the-counter medications in the stomach, which can affect how well drugs work or lead to unanticipated side effects, health experts say. Shiew Mei Huang of FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research says almost 30% of patients use more than five drugs and half of people on prescription medications take OTC therapies or supplements, so patients should be clear with health professionals about which therapies they are using.
