Alfred Thigpen says it was during a regular eye exam that his physician noticed “freckles” on his retinas and urged him to have a colonoscopy, which resulted in the removal of several polyps, including one that was precancerous. Research has shown some connection between congenital hypertrophy of the retinal pigment epithelium and hereditary colon polyps, and a study in the American Journal of Gastroenterology said patients with these freckles should be referred for a colonoscopy.
