What’s new here and important for clinicians?
The prevalence of NAFLD has been rising over the past decades, imposing burden on public health. Studies have shown increasing prevalence of NAFLD in North America, Europe, and East Asia, but the burden of NAFLD in the rest of the world is less clear.
In this study, we used data from the global burden of disease study (GBD), to analyze the global and regional trend of NAFLD prevalence. We found the global NAFLD prevalence rate increased over 50% from 1990 to 2019. The increase in NAFLD prevalence was more prominent in countries with middle SDI and countries in North African and Middle Eastern regions, possibly due to changes in lifestyle in these areas over the past 30 years.
What do patients need to know?
NAFLD, a cause of more severe liver diseases including NASH and liver cancer, has becoming more common worldwide. People should maintain a healthy lifestyle to avoid NAFLD. More research on prevention and treatment of NAFLD is warranted.
