Membership Categories and Qualifications
Associate Member
- Must be an accredited nursing professional (i.e. RN, APRN, CGRN, LPN, LVN, etc.) in good standing; or otherwise involved in GI clinical care (i.e. genetic counselor, nutritionist, dietitian, behavior therapist or others involved in clinical care); or involved in practice administration (i.e. practice manager, executive, billing specialist, etc.).
- Associate Members are not eligible to vote or to hold elective office

Advanced Practice Provider Member

Medical Students

Resident/Trainee Member
- Graduation from a recognized medical school with the degree of Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy
- Residents shall be enrolled in approved training programs which include some exposure to gastroenterology, GI endoscopy, hepatology or gastrointestinal surgery
- Trainees shall be enrolled in an approved gastroenterology fellowship program
- Resident & Trainee Members are not eligible to vote or to hold elective office

Member
- Graduation from a recognized medical school with the degree of Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy
- Applicants who are not physicians must possess a graduate degree in a field of specialization related to basic or clinical sciences (i.e. PhD, PharmD, PsyD, etc.)
- Graduate degree shall have been received at least four years prior to application
- Application supported by a Member or Fellow of the College
- Applicants shall demonstrate a major interest in the field of gastroenterology and document such interest.
- Applicants shall endeavor to exhibit outstanding humanistic qualities in their professional pursuits.

International Member
- Qualified individuals (M.D., D.O., M.B., Ph.D.) residing outside of the United States and Canada, who meet the qualifications set forth above in the Member category
- Individuals from countries classified by the World Bank as Upper Middle to High Income (click here for a full list)
- Application fee of $150 (includes initial dues fee and subscription to The American Journal of Gastroenterology)
- If you are living in a Hinari country designated by the World Health Organization (WHO) you will only have access to The American Journal of Gastroenterology online. No print issues will be mailed. View list of countries for online only access to the AJG.

ACG has two categories of International Membership based on the World Bank Country Classification by Income Level:

*Fellows of the College (FACG) pay annual membership dues of $325 regardless of where they live.
Fellow (FACG)
- Fellowship is an honor bestowed by the American College of Gastroenterology in recognition of significant professional achievement and superior competence within the field of gastroenterology, pediatric gastroenterology, gastrointestinal surgery, gastrointestinal radiology, or gastrointestinal pathology.
- Letters of recommendation by two Fellows of the College. The letters should, at a minimum, include:
- How well you know the applicant (in what capacity, for how long, etc.)
- Qualifications that justify Fellowship, specifically describing the applicant’s scope of practice, their strengths, including:
- Research and publications
- Teaching
- Clinical care
- Medical leadership
- Community service related to Gastroenterology
- The candidate’s integrity and moral character
- Activities in the College, such as Committee service, presentations, etc.
- A means of contact if the Committee has questions
- Current uninterrupted Membership or International Membership in the College for a period of no less than five years (post Resident/Trainee Membership). During this time demonstration of scholarly activities, which include continuing education experience, professional leadership, and excellence in the fields of clinical practice and/or academic medicine.
- Minimum of 3 distinct* ACG managed and sponsorred CME courses within the last six years:
- Three in-person meetings are required (Exceptions will be considered for extenuating circumstances)
- *Attendance at multiple courses in the same meeting, e.g., PG Course and Annual Meeting, or Regional Meeting plus Hepatology School counts as one program
- Evidence of ongoing involvement in ACG activities such as Committees, Courses, Annual Meeting attendance, etc.
- Documentation of certification by one or more of the following specialty boards recognized by the Council on Graduate Medical Education of the American Medical Association: American Board of Internal Medicine, (subspecialty Boards in Gastroenterology), or its equivalent, e.g. American Board of Pediatrics (subspecialty Board in Gastroenterology), American Board of Surgery, American Board of Radiology, American Board of Pathology, the American Osteopathic Board of Internal Medicine or the Canadian equivalent qualifications, Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons.

Senior Member or Fellow
- Members or Fellows who have attained the age of 65 years or have retired from active practice
- Senior Members and Fellows are not eligible to vote or to hold elective office
- Optional American Journal of Gastroenterology Annual Subscription fee = $35
Master
- This is a rare honor conferred upon physicians by the Awards Committee and the Board of Trustees who have demonstrated distinguished service to the College and to the field of clinical GI patient care and education. Click here to nominate a colleague.

- The ACG Credentials Committee reviews applications for Membership, International Membership and Advancement to Fellowship quarterly. Associate, Advanced Practice Provider and Resident/Trainee applications are reviewed every two weeks. Deadlines for each quarterly review are listed below:
- January 2025 Review
Applications must be submitted by December 20, 2024 - April 2025 Review
Applications must be submitted by March 14, 2025 - June 2025 Review
Applications must be submitted by May 16, 2025 - October 2025 Review
Applications must be submitted by September 19, 2025 - All ACG memberships run from January 1 to December 31 each year, regardless of the time of year that you join.
