Our study has shown that combined oral contraceptives are associated with increased risks of developing new-onset irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and its subtypes, including IBS with predominant constipation (IBS-C), IBS with predominant diarrhea (IBS-D), and IBS with mixed bowel habits (IBS-M).

What do patients need to know?
Combined oral contraceptives are associated with higher risks of developing new-onset irritable bowel syndrome in women of reproductive age.
