Author Insight from Jacqueline Khalil, MS, DO
What’s new here and important for clinicians?
Our study reveals a compelling association between HRT and an increased risk of developing IBS, which persists overtime. Additionally, HRT is correlated with elevated gastrointestinal symptoms, medications used commonly in IBS patients and increased diagnostic testing. Clinicians should be cognizant about the gastrointestinal side effects when prescribing HRT.
What do patients need to know?
Post-menopausal women prescribed HRT should be aware of the potential effects of HRT, particularly regarding IBS.
