Poster 1947 The Impact of Institutional Social Media Involvement in Gastroenterology

Author Insight from Austin L. Chiang, MD, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Endoscopy

What’s new here and important for clinicians?

Social media is an effective way for institutions to increase visibility and raise awareness, as social media has become increasingly recognized as an important source from which the public obtains general and medical information.  We found that among gastroenterology and GI surgery institutions, the number of followers an institution has gained on Twitter is associated with institutional ranking on U.S. News and World Report. Social media involvement could reflect an institution’s willingness to adopt innovative methods of communication to enhance patient care and promote public health. Institutions may wish to increase their social media presence to not only engage the public, but also to help boost reputation and achieve higher rankings on U.S. News and World Report.

What do patients need to know?

Patients may find it effective to stay informed about medical topics of interest through following institutional social media accounts.
