An Interview with Jill Gaidos, MD, FACG
Dr. Millie Long, of the University of North Carolina, visited Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) to lecture the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology Grand Rounds. While there, she spoke with Dr. Gaidos, who works at VCU, for the Conversations with Women in GI series.
Long reflects on the value of education and training, focusing her research on prevention, facing and overcoming obstacles in her research career, and what she enjoys and learns from her roles on the ACG Research Committee and as an Associate Editor for The American Journal of Gastroenterology.
On how sound mentorship can help you overcome obstacles in your research career, Long says:
In many instances, it takes small steps to get to your ultimate goal… This is the role of good mentorship—to help, no matter where you are in your career, to kind of ground you. A mentor can say, ‘OK, if that is where you ultimately want to get, here is what we need to do to get there.’
