Sedentary lifestyle is linked to mortality and disease, studies show

About 5 million people died in 2008 from diseases related to a sedentary lifestyle, and about 1.5 billion people worldwide do not get recommended amounts of physical activity, according to studies in The Lancet. Inactivity is a risk factor comparable to smoking or obesity, researchers said, and is estimated to cause 10% of colon and breast cancers, 7% of type 2 diabetes cases and 6% of heart disease cases.
